To suit the goal-setting methodologies of most companies, Mesh provides the option of having cascading goals, where a goal can have one or more child goals.
Certain goals have child goals to break down complex objectives into smaller, manageable tasks, ensuring clarity, alignment, and a structured approach towards achieving the overarching goal. This hierarchical structure helps in organising efforts, assigning responsibilities, and tracking progress at different levels, promoting efficiency and coordinated execution.
You can create child objectives as well as child key results for an objective by default. If you have enabled "KR-KR cascading" for your organisation, you can create child key results for a parent key result as well.
You can add a child goal directly while creating the parent goal, or later while editing the parent goal.
Adding the Child Goal on creating the parent goal
You can read more about the steps to create a goal
here.
Once you have defined all the characteristics of the parent goal, you can choose the option to Save and add Child to add a child Goal from the split button dropdown beside the default state.
Thus, you can select the Save & Add Child Key Result option to add a child key result to your goal.
Adding the Child Goal while editing the parent goal
You may want to add a child goal(s) at a later stage after creating the parent goal. To do the same:
Step 1: Select the Goals module from the Performance tab on the homepage
Step 2: On the "Goals homepage", select the goal (objective or key result) that you wish to edit.
Step 3: To add a child goal, select the Child Alignment option from the side navigation bar.
Step 4: You will be able to see all the child goals of the goal. Select the Add New button on the top left, after which you would be required to select whether you wish to Add Objective or Add Key Result.
Do note that the child goal (objective or key result) would be added in the same timeframe as the parent goal.
Step 5: Select the type of goal that you wish to add, and you would be led to the “Add goal” screen, where you can define your goal. Refer to this page to understand how to add an objective, or how to add a key result.
Alternatively, you can also add a Child Goal directly from the Goals List View. To do the same:
Step 1: On selecting the Goal (Objective or Key result), click on the Ellipsis icon in the top left corner, beside the title of the goal.
Step 2: Select whether you want to Add Child Objective or Add Child Key Result as a child to the goal in question.
Do note that the child goal (objective or key result) would be added in the same timeframe as the parent goal.
Step 3: You would be led to the “Add goal” screen, where you can define your goal.
Note: Adding a child goal to a key result needs to be enabled in the Goal Setting Methodology for your company. To understand more about Goal Setting Methodologies in Mesh, please refer to this article.
